Speaking Up Isn’t Dangerous. Silence Is.

H.E.R. Haven Blog/Speaking Up Isn’t Dangerous. Silence Is.

You’ve been told to keep your head down.
To pick your battles.
Not to rock the boat.

And maybe for a while, you believed it.

You bit your tongue. You laughed off the comments. You brushed it all under the rug—hoping it would pass, hoping things would get better if you just stayed quiet.

But let’s be honest.

The more you stayed silent, the worse it got.

Silence Doesn’t Keep You Safe—It Keeps You Stuck

In toxic environments, silence becomes the oxygen that keeps the fire burning.

Every time you ignore that passive-aggressive jab…
Every time you let them take credit for your work…
Every time you convince yourself it’s “not a big deal”—
You’re not keeping the peace.
You’re surrendering your power.

And you’re sending a message to them—and to yourself—that you’ll tolerate it.

Speaking Up Isn’t About Starting Drama—It’s About Stopping the Damage

Let’s clear something up:
Speaking up doesn’t mean screaming in a meeting.
It doesn’t mean causing chaos or getting labeled “difficult.”

It means calmly and confidently saying:
“That’s not okay with me.”
“I’d like to finish my thought.”
“I want to revisit the credit for that idea.”
“I need to document this interaction.”

It’s not confrontation—it’s protection.
It’s how you set the tone for how you’ll be treated.

You Don’t Have to Win the Fight—You Just Have to Stop Losing by Default

You don’t have to be loud.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You just have to stop disappearing to make others comfortable.

Every time you speak up—even just once—you interrupt the cycle.
You protect your peace.
And you model courage for the next woman watching.

Final Thoughts: Stop Letting Them Win by Default
They count on your silence.
They thrive on your fear.
But they don’t get to decide how your story goes.

You get to choose something different.
Something safer. Something stronger. Something more you.

Hi, I'm Martina O'Neal

Creator of H.E.R. Haven Blog

I help women in male-dominated workplaces overcome bullying, beat stress and anxiety, and go from just surviving the workday to truly thriving from 9 to 5.

I worked as a Construction Project Manager in Corporate America for more than 20 years, so I know all too well the fear of participating in weekly meetings and dealing with a difficult boss.

It's my goal empower and guide women to thriving in any workplace even in a room full of men.
