There was a moment—after being picked apart in meetings, overlooked for projects, and constantly second-guessed—when I started to wonder if maybe I wasn’t good enough.
I kept replaying the comments.
The sideways glances.
The deafening silence after I spoke up.
I was shrinking—second-guessing myself, apologizing for things that weren’t wrong, and walking on eggshells just to survive the day.
Until one day, a mentor looked me in the eye and said:
“They wouldn’t have hired you if you weren’t qualified.”
It stopped me in my tracks.
Because they were right.
I was qualified.
I had earned my place.
I didn’t have to prove my worth to people who were more invested in maintaining power than supporting progress.
That one sentence reminded me that the problem wasn’t me—it was the culture I was navigating. A culture where confidence is perceived as a threat, where competence is met with sabotage, and where power games replace professionalism.
I carried that sentence like a shield after that day.
Whenever I felt dismissed, I reminded myself: I belong here.
Whenever someone tried to diminish me, I remembered: I’m not an impostor.
Whenever I was silenced, I told myself: I’m allowed to speak.
If you’re doubting yourself right now—if the constant nitpicking and disrespect has made you question your skills, your presence, or your place in the room—I want you to remember this:
They wouldn’t have hired you if you weren’t qualified.
You don’t have to shrink to survive.
You don’t have to earn the right to be respected.
And you damn sure don’t have to apologize for showing up with intelligence, strength, and ambition.
Final Thoughts
In toxic workplaces, it’s easy to internalize the mistreatment. To believe the whispers, the silence, the subtle slights. But here's the truth: your value isn’t up for debate just because someone else feels threatened by it.
That one reminder from my mentor—“They wouldn’t have hired you if you weren’t qualified”—helped me start the journey back to myself. It was a turning point. A call to stop questioning my worth and start defending my peace.
And now I’m passing that reminder on to you.
You are not imagining things.
You are not being too sensitive.
You are not the problem.
You’re qualified. You’re capable. You deserve to be treated with respect—and that’s not negotiable.

I help women in male-dominated workplaces overcome bullying, beat stress and anxiety, and go from just surviving the workday to truly thriving from 9 to 5.
I worked as a Construction Project Manager in Corporate America for more than 20 years, so I know all too well the fear of participating in weekly meetings and dealing with a difficult boss.
It's my goal empower and guide women to thriving in any workplace even in a room full of men.
