Back to the Bullsh*t: What No One Talks About After PTO Ends

H.E.R. Haven Blog/Back to the Bullsh*t: What No One Talks About After PTO Ends

You took your PTO. You finally exhaled.

For a few precious days, you weren’t being questioned, nitpicked, or made to feel like you didn’t belong.

Maybe you slept. Maybe you laughed again. Maybe—for the first time in a while—you felt like yourself.

But now?

The out-of-office reply is off.

The anxiety is back on.

And your first day walking back into that toxic job feels like walking into a war zone without armor.

The Harsh Whiplash of Reentry

There’s a specific kind of emotional whiplash that hits when you return to a place that drains you.

No one warns you about it.

You’re expected to hit the ground running—as if you didn’t just spend your PTO trying to piece yourself back together.

And the worst part? The passive-aggressive welcome:

* “Must be nice to take time off.”

* “Hope you enjoyed the break—things were *crazy* without you.”

* Or the silent treatment, like your absence was a personal betrayal.

It’s enough to make you wish you hadn’t come back at all.

How to Protect Your Peace on Day One Back

You can’t always control the workplace—but you can control how you move through it.

🧘🏾‍♀️ 1. Start Your Day With Grounding, Not Dread

Before you even open your inbox, take 5–10 minutes for you.

Deep breaths. Journal. Stretch. Affirm:

I do not owe this job my sanity. I show up, but I do not shrink.”

📋 2. Reclaim Your Schedule

Block off time to catch up *without being reactive*.

Say no to unnecessary meetings. You don’t owe urgency to people who disrespect your peace.

Your PTO doesn’t make you behind—they just got used to you doing everything.

💬 3. Be Ready for the Comments (Without Explaining Yourself)

Toxic coworkers love to guilt-trip people who take time for themselves.

Here’s your reminder: You earned your PTO. You’re not available for guilt.

Sample response:

➡️ *“Yup—it was great, and exactly what I needed. How can I help you?”*

(Short. Professional. No apology.)

🧱 4. Rebuild the Mental Wall

That wall you built between work and self during PTO? Reinforce it.

Don’t let the chaos back in.

Keep your boundaries, even when it feels easier to slip into survival mode.

Final Thoughts: You Deserve Rest AND Respect

Coming back from PTO shouldn’t feel like walking into a trap.

But when your job is toxic, even rest can come with a side of retaliation.

So here’s your truth: You don’t need to feel guilty for taking care of yourself.

And you’re not wrong for dreading what you came back to.

But that dread? It’s also data.

It’s showing you what’s no longer working.

And you’re allowed to start making plans to build something better.
