There’s nothing more draining than showing up to work every day and never knowing which version of your boss you’re going to get.
One minute they’re calm, the next they’re snapping at everyone in sight.

And so, without even realizing it, you start tiptoeing. Choosing your words carefully. Overexplaining. Doing everything you can to avoid setting them off.

That constant tension? It’s exhausting.

But here’s the truth you need to hear: it’s not your job to manage their moods.

The Trap of Emotional Babysitting

Toxic bosses thrive when the people around them absorb their instability. When you make it your job to keep them calm, you carry the weight of their insecurities instead of holding them accountable for their behavior.

You’re not hired to play peacekeeper, therapist, or punching bag. Your role is your work—not managing their emotions.

So how do you break the cycle? You focus on what you can control.

Protecting Yourself Without Playing Their Game

When you stop carrying the responsibility for their moods, you create space to protect yourself. Here’s how:

Document Everything. Keep a log of your work, decisions, and accomplishments. This isn’t paranoia—it’s protection. If they twist the story later, you’ve got the receipts.

Stay Steady. Don’t match their chaos with chaos of your own. A calm, steady tone communicates more authority than raised voices ever will.

Set Mental Boundaries. You can’t control how they show up, but you can control what you take home. Their bad day doesn’t get to live rent-free in your head.

Final Thoughts

Walking on eggshells around a toxic boss will never make them easier to deal with. It only leaves you more drained, more anxious, and more uncertain of yourself.

So stop carrying the weight of their insecurities. Their mood is not your responsibility.
