H.E.R. Haven Blog/You Don’t Have to Tolerate It Just Because It’s ‘Normal’ at Your Job

You’ve heard it before:
“That’s just how it is around here.”
“You’ve got to have thick skin in this field.”
“It’s part of the culture—don’t take it personally.”

Let’s stop right there.
Just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.
And just because they’ve all decided to tolerate it doesn’t mean you have to.

“Normal” Doesn’t Mean Safe

A workplace where bullying, manipulation, gossip, and exclusion are brushed off as “just how it is”?
That’s not normal. That’s TOXIC.

The moment your body starts tightening with anxiety every time your boss walks by…
The moment you start rehearsing your emails a dozen times so no one takes them the wrong way…
The moment you start to lose sleep, confidence, and motivation—
That’s the moment you know:
This isn’t just a bad day. It’s a bad environment.

Toxic Behavior That’s Been Normalized Is Still Toxic

Let them roll their eyes. Let them say you’re being “too sensitive.”
Wanting to be respected isn’t a flaw—it’s healthy.

You’re not dramatic for:

Wanting a meeting where you’re not constantly interrupted

Expecting credit for your ideas

Asking to be treated like a human being, not a punching bag

And the more they normalize this toxic behavior, the more dangerous it becomes—for everyone.

You’re Not the Problem—You’re the One Paying Attention

If your gut is screaming, if your peace is gone, if your confidence is slipping… it’s not because you’re weak.

It’s because you’re noticing what others have been trained to ignore.

They’ve numbed themselves to survive. You’re choosing to feel to heal.
And that? That’s powerful.

Final Thoughts: You Deserve More Than a Job That Destroys You

Let’s be real—no paycheck is worth your mental health, your identity, or your peace of mind.

You don’t have to shrink, adapt, or accept abuse just to keep the peace.
You’re allowed to want more. You’re allowed to demand better.
You’re allowed to say: “This may be normal to you—but it’s not okay with me.”

It’s not your fault. It’s not in your head. And you’re not alone.

Hi, I'm Martina O'Neal

Creator of H.E.R. Haven Blog

I help women in male-dominated workplaces overcome bullying, beat stress and anxiety, and go from just surviving the workday to truly thriving from 9 to 5.

I worked as a Construction Project Manager in Corporate America for more than 20 years, so I know all too well the fear of participating in weekly meetings and dealing with a difficult boss.

It's my goal empower and guide women to thriving in any workplace even in a room full of men.
